Hot Dog (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1)

Step into Reading: Hot Dog
I love this book because this is the first book my child could read by himself.

At first glance, this book is just the same as any other simple children's picture books.  I bought this book by accident because it was light and cheap and we were going to travel.

For some reason, the combination of pictures and the way each sentence repeats itself makes it a particularly interesting book for my kid.

After I read it repeatly as a bedtime book for weeks, I started to show my kid "d-o-g" is "dog."  And he started to read "dog" every time this word shows up.  Then it was within days, he read the whole book.  I knew he memorized most of it because if I pointed to a particular word and not "dog", he couldn't necessary give a correct answer.   But for a mother who is raising a delayed kid, the experience was magical and encouraging.

To  utilize my child's great interest in this book, I designed a couple of worksheets for this book.  One worksheet is to link words such as "dog" "pig" and "cat" that appear in the book to the proper pictures.  The other is to use flashcards that I made based on this book to make simple sentences, such as "Dog is hot."  My kid now can read all these words and even makes his own sentences with the cards.  He is now at the appropriate reading level.

If you like my site and my idea, please support it by using my Amazon link to purchase the "Hot Dog" book.  The link is totally safe and I won't make any money when you click it.
Link words on the left to the pictures on the right.
Put your child's name in the first rectangle and then cut down the words to make flashcards.

Suggest games:

1. The very first game I tried this with my child.  I put "Dog is hot.  Miles (his name) is not."  He could read it.  And he loved it.  Then I started switching words and asked him to read.

2. I also give him three words and tell him the sentence to make.

I only play this kind of learning game about 5 - 10 minutes each time.  As soon as my kid shows a loss of interest, I might encourage him a bit more or tell him if you finish this you can play...  But I don't push him to continue much longer.  This keeps it fun and fresh.
